Make Plans Now for the 2014 Calabasas Malibu Wine & Food Festival

Eighth Annual 2014 Calabasas Malibu Wine & Food Festival

With a national advertising campaign resulting in over 100 million media impressions, the Calabasas Malibu Wine & Food Festival provides an unprecedented opportunity for local businesses to increase the amount of publicity and recognition that their brand receives. Local eateries and tourist attractions have had greatly increased traffic during past festival events, and this year is on track to break previous attendance records.

The festival offers businesses a great partnership and even greater visibility due to this massive national campaign. With premiere media partnerships such as the LA TIMES, Travelzoo, and other notable national publications, the Calabasas Malibu Wine & Food Festival brings added attention, revenue and good will to the community, all while benefiting a worthy cause.

This two week long event features a slate of tasting affairs that highlight numerous local eateries and restaurants, bringing media attention and new customers to local businesses that might not otherwise gain this level of exposure.

Local hotels and motels in Calabasas and Malibu have historically experienced a surge in occupancy rates, and are typically sold out during the two weeks of the Calabasas Malibu Wine & Food Festival.

Area restaurants and bars are packed during the two week festivities, and enjoy a proven increase in residual business that multiplies each year with the coming of the next festival. The impact of participating in previous festivals is now being felt by a variety of local businesses such as providers of scenic tours and excursions, specialty boutiques, auto mobile dealerships and a variety of shopping destinations.

Businesses in Malibu and Calabasas alike are seeing an increase in their profitability because of the traffic and visibility that a partnership with the festival brings. Local wineries report that they are filled with out of town guests looking to get their hands on the Malibu gold, some of the best wines that California has to offer.

More and more, this event is making a prominent impact not only on area businesses, but is giving back to the community as well. Last year, proceeds from the event were used to purchase all new equipment for the local high school.

Both businesses and the community benefit from the increased tourism and national recognition that this unprecedented media exposure will provide.

Simply Wine Festival Coming to Ventura County in March

Simply Wine Festival 2014

One might be surprised by some of the elite names, such as premium electric car manufacturer, Tesla Motors and cellar-masters, Premier Cru Collection, which are associated with the Simply Wine Festival event to benefit Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village this coming March.

Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in a mission to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

While the purpose of the event is to raise funding for the revered Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties, the occasion also affords wine lovers a welcomed opportunity to taste brands such as high-scoring Achaval-Ferrer, LeSaffre Wines, Gauchezco and the much-loved, If You See Kay. Additionally ultra-premium spirits brands such as Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal and Tallarico Vodka will pour.

In fact, the brands attending are so recognized and acclaimed that a Sommelier panel has been assembled, comprising such industry icons such as Meridith May, Publisher and Editorial Director at The Tasting Panel and The Somm Journal; Bonnie Graves, celebrated Sommelier (Spago, Jean-Georges); and, Kaj Stromer, G.M., Wine Director, Woodland Hills Wine Company, among other peers, who will judge the attending wineries and spirits brands in the following categories: Most Outstanding Varietal in its Category, Best in Blends, Excellence in the Spirits Space, Exceptional Value (Best Buy), Category Innovator.

High-end restaurants will also participate with dishes representing their respective flavor profiles and themes, giving wine-lovers a reprieve from tasting, and an opportunity to experience some of the stellar gastronomy in their surrounding areas.

“These events are important to the educational process,” said Meridith May, of The Tasting Panel and The Somm Journal. “In order to help the consumer develop their palate, it’s important to elevate the standard of events in which we participate. The level of wines at this event is impressive and those attending will get the opportunity to taste what a wine in its respective varietal ‘should’ taste like.”

David Biggar, Wine Enthusiast’s Innovator of the Year Award recipient and Partner at Vintage Point noted, “A wine tasting should be just that...a place to learn about wines and experience excellent examples. And that’s how we like to address the consumer: through education.”

Support The Monuments Men and George Clooney In The Search For Lost Art

George Clooney in The Monuments Men

In anticipation of the nationwide release of The Monuments Men, the new film from director George Clooney based on the true story of the race to save 1000 years of culture, moviegoers can visit SupportTheMonumentsMen.com, where they will find resources and information about the ways we all can continue the search for landmark works that were stolen or taken as souvenirs during World War II and are still missing today. The film, which is written by George Clooney & Grant Heslov, will be released on February 7, 2014.

Robert M. Edsel, who founded and heads the Monuments Men Foundation, added, "The Monuments Men and women saved almost five million cultural objects, but so much is still missing. They could be anywhere, in your grandfather's attic, or hiding in plain sight. I'm thrilled that with the release of the movie, there will be a way for the public to help complete these heroes' mission. Call 1-866-WWII-ART and find out how you can help."

At SupportTheMonumentsMen.com, moviegoers can sign a virtual petition supporting the Monuments Men's efforts to preserve and protect great cultural works of art by encouraging members of Congress to honor the Monuments Men with the Congressional Gold Medal.

In addition, visitors will find a phone number – 1-866-WWII-ART – which will connect callers directly to the Monuments Men Foundation, where they can speak with a Monuments Men Foundation representative regarding the search for lost art.

Also as a part of the Support the Monuments Men site, visitors will find an interactive map. On the map, moviegoers can find out local museums that will be featuring their institutions' connection to the Monuments Men – such as personnel who participated in the campaign or rescued works of art that hang on the museums' walls.

On the "Journey of the Monuments Men" feature, visitors can read about the history – from information about the real Monuments Men to the efforts they and others took to save landmark works during the war.

Finally, the studio has developed an educational program to engage high school and college students, families and art buffs about the story of the Monuments Men. The educational site, at MonumentsMenEducation.com, features downloadable lesson plans that meet common core state standards, an interactive map, and videos to spark discussion and aid educators in building a curriculum. Students are also invited to get involved by uploading photos of local works of art that best represent their communities. The photos can be uploaded by visiting the Tumblr page at LocalTreasure.tumblr.com.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world's artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners. With the art hidden behind enemy lines, how could these guys hope to succeed?

But as the Monuments Men found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements. From director George Clooney, the film stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett. The screenplay is by George Clooney & Grant Heslov, based on the book by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter. Produced by Grant Heslov and George Clooney.

Esperanza Los Cabos Mexico

Five Auberge Resorts properties throughout North America have been recognized by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler by naming them to the publication’s 2014 Gold List, an exclusive collection of the world’s top hotels, resorts and cruise lines. “We’re so pleased to have our resorts on this coveted list – we strive to stay on it year after year by crafting personalized experiences at our signature properties, which are true gems in some of the best destinations in the world,” said Mark Harmon, Managing Partner, Auberge Resorts. Contemporary Art and Artists Arrive in Palm Springs During Modernism Week February 2014

Roy Lichtenstein

Palm Springs is known for design, style and luxury. In February, thousands arrive to explore the best of these through fine art, architecture and modernism events. The hottest show in February for fine art collectors, buyers and aficionados as well as the museum curator audience is The 3rd Annual Palm Springs Fine Art Fair (PSFAF) taking place February 13-16, 2014.

After its first two years, the Fair has already become a must see for collectors and fans of Contemporary Art. A veritable pop-up museum of modern art valued at over $100 million from over 60 international galleries will be presented in the exhibit hall at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The extraordinary exhibition curates a dynamic review of works by artists including Karel Appel, Le Corbusier, Henry Jackson, Frank Stella, Raymond Jonson, Pablo Picasso, Kenneth Noland, Jennifer Bartlett, Chul Hyan Ahn, David Middlebrook, and many more.

With recent art auction house sales breaking records in New York for contemporary art, coupled with the frenzy of buying at Art Basel Miami week, it appears this genre has a renewed popularity. “This is Contemporary and Modern art that is alive and in the moment,” says producer Rick Friedman, “Collectors perceive that art is not only beauty, but also as an alternative investment.” Palm Springs Fine Art Fair is the hottest ticket on the Fine Art winter circuit not only because of the beautiful destination, but also because of the quality of the art, the artists and the excitement of what’s in the show.

One piece that will be dazzling the audience will be Steve Maloney’s Ride-em-Cowboy, a sculpture created from a Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter and a Long Horn Steer. “Palm Springs is bigger than life and we felt Steve’s piece captures both contemporary and future,” continues Friedman.

The larger-than-life-size Ride-em-Cowboy is a decommissioned bone yard chopper, engine-free yet structurally sound, dressed to the hilt inside and out with thousands of colored gemstones; old cowhide chairs; authentic Longhorn Steer skull; iPad with virtual flight simulator; Swarovski crystal chandelier; a built-in high-polished lapped and riveted aluminum bar inspired by a vintage Airstream trailer; hand-war-painted Indian Motorcycle front fender lights; yards of LED lighting strips; and vinyl cowhide wrap exterior. “The use of repurposed materials creates a familiarity and allows people to relate to the work in a personal way. Steve is unafraid to bombard our senses – and our sense of humor. It’s great to see contemporary art that makes people smile,” says James Carona, owner of Heather James Gallery.

The exhibition also includes expert panel discussions that are standing room only. “Whether you are buying your first piece or have a collection that is museum-worthy, the panels are there to inform and create dialog about art, collecting and the artists represented,” says Friedman.

Tickets are on sales at PalmSpringsFineArtFair.com. The VIP Black Card pass provides exclusive access to the Opening Preview Party. General admission is $25. The Palm Springs Fine Art Fair is produced by the Hamptons Expo Group of Southampton, New York. They produce 4 other events throughout the year: ArtHamptons, ArtAspen, The Houston Fine Art Fair, and Silicon Valley Contemporary.

An eclectic mix of international VIP guests was kept at awe all night by the contemporary atmosphere and transcultural-mixed music from Pavoriti and Frank Sinatra, to Marc Anthony, Freddie Mercury, Daft Punk and Iris Chacon.

Guests included Maria Britto, Carla Camacho (Lehmann Maupin Gallery), Jennifer Johnson, Joe Duke, Kymberly Marciano, Hale Salzburg (Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery), Richard Jay Alexander (Barbara Streisand's director) Richard Blanco (inaugural poet), Puerto Rican art collectors: Ednita and Rolando Jimenez, Elena and Yamil Rivera, Mitty and Francisco Romero and Tony Pabon; Marianne Ramirez (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo PR); Dra. Lourdes Ramos (Museo de Arte de PR), Puerto Rican Chef Jose Enrique (Food & Wine's Best New Chefs of 2013); Simon Baeyertz (New Zealand entrepreneur); among others.

Chabot Space and Science Center and Dashe Cellars Launch THE COMET Wine

THE COMET wine by Dashe Cellars

Chabot Space & Science Center, in partnership with Oakland-based Dashe Cellars, announces the launch of THE COMET, a new wine produced and named to honor the Comet ISON, the recent comet attracting extraordinary media attention in November.

THE COMET follows in a centuries old tradition of "comet vintages," in which vintners would create a special wine to commemorate years in which major comets passed Earth. Dashe Cellars has renewed the tradition with a unique limited edition wine, and 10% of the proceeds from sales of THE COMET will be donated to Chabot Space & Science Center.

According to Dashe Cellars, "THE COMET was created by carefully selecting individual barrels of old-vine zinfandel made from the Todd Brothers Ranch in Alexander Valley, a high end vineyard in Sonoma County. These selected barrels were then blended with a small amount of dark, intense Petite Sirah to add balance. The wine include with intense aromas of black raspberry, wild cherry, and black currant fruit, with highlights of chocolate and black pepper spice. In the mouth, the wine has a great velvety texture and explosive flavors of blackberry, cassis, plum, clove, and black pepper, with a long, spicy finish that lasts for minutes. A rich, full-bodied wine, THE COMET has the intensity and complexity that is the perfect accompaniment to holiday feasts of any type."

Chabot CEO Alexander Zwissler stated, "Our partnership with Dashe Cellars is based on our mutual appreciation of science. Michael and Anne Dashe – both with science backgrounds – share our commitment to strengthening science education in our community. We hope Chabot supporters and wine enthusiasts will gift THE COMET to their friends and family, and spark discussions of what's happening in astronomy and science."

Although the Comet ISON was predicted to be "the comet of the century" by some astronomers, it fizzled out spectacularly on Thanksgiving Day after its perihelion, or journey close to the Sun. THE COMET wine is expected to have a longer life, but production is limited to 100 cases. THE COMET is available directly from Dashe Cellars at $35 a bottle, or by the case, and can be ordered online at DasheCellars.com or may be purchased from Dashe Cellars at the tasting room, located at 55 4th St. in the Jack London Square Historic Warehouse district.

Italian Wine Sets a New Trend Among Russian Consumers

Russian woman drinking Italian wine

The tenth edition of Vinitaly Russia opens with a flurry of bottles and ends with a smile as producers, importers, journalists and key players of the Russian world of wine share with Vinitaly International their optimistic view of the future of Italian wine in a difficult but promising market where all that is Italian has become fashionable and stylish.

“Italian wine is a great success story in the Russian market, it sells more and more and we love to spend money on it: we love Italy, we love to go to Italy and we love to spend money on Italian wine inside Russia. Italy is fashionable and very successful” said Igor Serdyuk, nominated in 2007 the "Most Influential Wine Writer" by Meininger's Who's Who in Russia and recently appointed Chief analyst for Simple Wine News.

The love for Italian wine, culture and food is also shared by top brasses of some of the most important Importing Companies in Russia such as Irina Fomina, Chairman of the Board at MBG and Dmitry Pinsky, Manging Director of DPTrade who also stressed that the strength of Italian wines in Russia owes a lot to the great success of Italian cuisine: “You can count hundreds and hundreds of Italian restaurants in Moscow and Trattorias and that's what is supporting the sales of Italian wines. Another advantage to Italian wines is a much better price to quality ratio than that of French wines. If we consider our portfolio, our sales are 40% Italian wines in value and only 22 to 25 % French. I personally consider the destiny of Italian wines in Russia as absolutely positive.”

Russia is undoubtedly a market that we need to target since it quite obviously loves the Italian style.” Says Daniela Mastrobernardino from Terradora Winery and President of Movimento del Turismo del Vino. “Vinitaly International is the best way to promote Italian wine especially since it helps consumers acquire a better knowledge of the excellence and richness of Italian produce”. Slow Food’s wine guide, Slow Wine, is at its third stop, after New York and Hong Kong, of a year long collaboration with Vinitaly International: “I am positively impressed by this event, not only because it has been a success but also because of the high level of interest shown by operators and consumers” explains Fabio Giavedoni. “ We know we have a great appeal here in Russia but I did not expect attendees to be so interested not only in the wine itself but also in the land and the way in which wine is produced. This is exactly the message we try to convey to all our readers though our guide.”

“This year’s edition of Vinitaly Russia was mostly focused on the quality of attendees rather than the quantity, thanks to a strict selection carried out through a double level registration system” explained Stevie Kim, Managing Director of Vinitaly International. “Talking with importers, journalists and producers during the event the general sentiment was that Italian wine has become the new trend of the moment in Russia. If we take advantage of this tendency and work as a team we can strengthen our presence in the Russian Market. In the mean time, we have been trying to help people live our events in real time through a continuous stream of videos, photos and information, which were published throughout the event on all our social media channels. We don’t presume to be perfect but we are really keen on engaging as much as possible all those producers, importers and Italian wine drinkers who follow us with such enthusiasm.

Adventurous guests can also spend time hiking, bicycling, golfing and fishing with the gorgeous Napa Valley scenery as the backdrop.

For couples, these outdoor excursions will certainly enhance any romantic interlude at The Inn on First. The fly fishing package is $525 per couple and $325 for one person. The inn needs three days notice to reserve the space, 50 percent deposit and has a 72-hour cancellation policy.

Guests will begin their day at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the inn where they will meet the guide, Richard Loft, who will offer an early morning continental breakfast. Guests will need to sign all the necessary paperwork, Loft will hand out a map, and guests will follow him for 45 minutes up into the hills beyond the Napa Valley.

Upon arriving to the river, Loft will suit guests up in waders and boots and explain the basics of fly fishing. After a few lessons of casting and reeling, the real fun begins! Wading out into the river, guests begin the process of catch and release and should plan on a minimum of two to three hours in the water. Snacks and water will be available during the time fishing. When guests are finished, they can sit down to enjoy a sandwich lunch and soak up the beauty of Napa County wilderness.

In general, guests can plan on returning to the inn no later than 1 p.m. which still leaves time for wine tasting in the afternoon. (Disclaimer: As with all fishing excursions, expect to have fun, but catching of fish is not guaranteed.) Fishing in the State of California requires a license, which can be procured from the California website or guests can visit Sweeney’s in Napa, located at 1537 Imola Ave West. New Zealand Creates World's Largest Pop-Up Book in Honor of The Hobbit

The Hobbit Popup Book

As movie fans await the imminent release of the second film of The Hobbit Trilogy – and another epic dose of Middle-earth landscapes – New Zealand has taken a cue from Hollywood by unveiling a giant pop-up book of New Zealand in Los Angeles.

The country that provided the epic scenery that backdrops The Hobbit Trilogy movies has installed the world's largest pop-up book - occupying an area roughly the size of two tennis courts and 50 feet high – in the grounds of the Beverly Hilton hotel, that shows how film fantasy becomes reality for visitors to New Zealand.

The pop-up book of New Zealand is on site for five days coinciding with the Hollywood world premiere of The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug – produced and directed by acclaimed Kiwi film-maker Sir Peter Jackson. It is divided into four sets representing new filming locations from the film – Hidden Bay (Turoa, Ohakune), Forest River (Pelorus River, Marlborough) Lake-town (Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook), and Beorn's House (Paradise, Queenstown).

With original pieces of the actual movie sets and living features of the real landscapes, the pop-up book employs multi-media production techniques and film-making wizardry to show how the film fantasy is firmly attached to the real life Middle-earth landscapes of New Zealand.

Guests will literally step into the giant book and take a unique journey through four of the principal filming locations for the Trilogy, combining the actuality of the book, and the magic of the movies with the reality of the Middle-earth locations.

Authentic props used for the pop-up book of New Zealand include the giant wooden armchair from Beorn's house, two-level waterside houses and a boat from Lake-town and the gigantic brooding bust of the dwarf king Thror that stood over the back entrance to Lonely Mountain.

It will set the stage for media activity and cast interviews with The Hobbit Trilogy stars for the media junket based around the LA premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Monday and provide an innovative setting for New Zealand hospitality and film business events.

The Hobbit Popup Book

Access to the pop-up book of New Zealand will be reserved for a series of invitation-only events, but a select group of lucky film fans will have the chance to browse the pages as part of a special public tour this Wednesday.

Jackson's epic Tolkien-inspired productions of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies have created a legendary fan following and been at the source, over the past decade, of a film tourism phenomenon for his home country New Zealand.

The much anticipated The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, is scheduled for worldwide release on 13 December, 2013.

In its commitment to recognizing the importance of below the line contributions to the art of filmmaking, Film Independent has now introduced, for the first year, the Best Editing category in the Spirit Awards.

"The nominations this year are from such an amazing pool of talented film artists," said Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent. "Their work demonstrates the deep originality and uniqueness of vision that are at the heart of independent film. At Film Independent, we work all year round to promote that spirit, and the nominees celebrated here today are tremendous ambassadors for their crafts, both in front of and behind the camera."

Winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The awards ceremony will be held as a daytime luncheon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, with the premiere broadcast airing later that evening at 10:00 pm ET/PT exclusively on IFC.

Indie Filmmaker Creating New Film Noir Superhero Movie Using LightWave 3D

Dr. Obsidian Airship

Superheroes are conceived for the realm of myth and might. This is especially true for the masked character Dr. Obsidian, a comic-book hero created by Mark Kochinski in hopes of captivating movie audiences in the forthcoming movie "Lost Hero: The Search for Dr. Obsidian." Shot in a variety of styles—from film noir to psychedelic sixties to high-def—Dr. Obsidian includes numerous CG shots created with LightWave 3D software.

The plot to "Dr. Obsidian," which Kochinski is creating, directing, producing, and writing, is that the Dr. Obsidian character got his start in the business during the late 1930s. Production for a sequel began overseas, but a ship carrying the film seemingly was lost at sea as war broke out. Afterward, financial issues prevented Brazen Pictures from re-establishing the character. With the introduction of television, Brazen planned to resurrect the property some years later, only to have the plans thwarted by scandal involving one of the actresses. A campy, psychedelic version almost made it to television during the 1960s. Then, during the comic-book craze in the 1990s, the property was optioned and now appears ready for a near-future return to the silver screen, this time under the direction of a big-name VFX master and a team of CGI Jedis.

With LightWave 3D software, Kochinski is making his Dr. Obsidian dream come true. “We had to crank out the effects at a high rate of speed and at minimum expense, and LightWave enabled us to do that,” he says. So when it came time to create Dr. Obsidian’s backstory – and the premise of the film – there was no question that LightWave would play a major role in the production.”

A Matter of Style

According to the filmmaker, it was crucial to treat the film to reflect the period it is supposed to have been shot in. Because a large part of Dr. Obsidian uses the 1930s black-and-white style, the film has to be aged and broken down. This includes many green screen sequences in which the actors had to be inserted into CG sets built in LightWave or, occasionally, into photographs of old sets and locations.

A large portion of the action was filmed against green screen, so virtual sets were important, many of which were created within LightWave. One of the first and the biggest CG backdrops is the interior of a zeppelin, which serves as the villain’s command center. In all, approximately 30 to 40 percent of the imagery is, or will be, computer graphics (CG).

For constructing the buildings, sets, and “futuristic” weapons and aircraft in Dr. Obsidian, Kochinski relied on the LightWave Modeler. “Modeling in LightWave has always been superb,” he says. “I have been building spaceships for Star Trek to Babylon 5, and now for Dr. Obsidian, in LightWave. The rendering out of the box is excellent, especially if you know how to use it properly. It is a very powerful tool.”

Kochinski likes LightWave’s intuitive interface and the fact that everything is logical and where it should be. “It’s a hard thing to explain when you have worked with the software for as long as I have, but it is organized in a way that makes sense. The fact that the buttons have what they do written on them, as opposed to a funky little picture that you have to take time to figure out what it means, saves a lot of time,” he explains.

The filmmaker also likes that Modeling and Layout are separate sections, especially because it coincides with his workflow. When starting a project, Kochinski skips the sketch-design process and dives straight into modeling in LightWave. “The pipeline supports this. I design in 3D to see what works and what doesn’t, so I design and build simultaneously,” he adds.

One of Kochinski’s favorite features within LightWave is the Edge Bevel. “Adding beveling properly adds a lot of realism to what you are doing,” he says, noting that the Cloning tool also works well for the art-deco look of the sequences in Dr. Obsidian. “I am doing a lot of beveling and cloning, and repeating of geometric shapes, adding hierarchies to get the effects I need.”

Most of the digitally enhanced sequences are from the 1930s scenes, so Kochinski used bump maps for the textures. “They are almost all procedural textures at this point,” he says. “We are talking about flat, painted surfaces that are shades of gray. So when we do photorealistic renders [inside LightWave], they tend to look pretty good.”

Even though LightWave offers a virtual camera, Kochinski is incorporating subtle camera moves into the production, mimicking those used in the 1930s. He is also mimicking the period’s classical stage lighting within LightWave by using three-point lighting, backfill, and key lighting. He uses the Radiosity tool quite a bit, at times using an HDR image map to start out. For more of a studio look, he will use a few dome lights and Monte Carlo radiosity to get bouncy shadows and lights, which “usually generates a nice three-dimensional-looking render.” For interiors, dome lights are preferred; for exterior shots, aerial lights.

“The renderer is fantastic,” says Kochinski of the feature in LightWave. “When set up properly, you get really wonderful, photorealistic effects.” LightWave’s unique Viewport Preview Renderer (VPR) interactive renderer enables him to experiment with lighting, textures, volumetrics, and shading right in the LightWave viewport and get immediate feedback, thus saving valuable time. “There isn’t anything quite like it, and I use it a lot with the work I am doing,” he says.

Past, Present, and Future

Kochinski is currently working in LightWave 11 on a dual-boot Power Mac and plans to migrate to LightWave 11.6 to take advantage of new features like support for 3D printing, the ability to create or use existing CgFX shaders, Spline Control, a surface-baker camera, stereoscopic review capabilities, Raycasting technology to make an object aware of its surroundings in an animation, and more.

Kochinski has spent more than six years working on Dr. Obsidian in his spare time with approximately 15 volunteers. Now, he is pulling together enough footage to raise $50,000 on Kickstarter, the amount needed to complete the project. Follow the movie’s progress at DoctorObsidian.com.

A Journey Through the Veneto Coming to New York City

Women Tasting Wine

During the month of December, New York City will be home to various wine and culinary events dedicated to celebrating the great wines of the Veneto just in time for the holidays. The month-long schedule of festivities is brought to the city by U.Vi.Ve., the ‘Union Consortia of Veneto Wines’, and will kick off on December 2nd with a press event at Eataly's La Scuola Grande, epicenter of the promotion and flagship store in the US for all things Italian.

As part of the month-long celebration, all of Eataly’s restaurants will pour signature wines from participating consortia including Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, Lugana DOC, Lessini Durello DOC, Montello e Colli Asolani DOC Prosecco DOC, Soave DOC and Valpolicella DOC. Consumers will also be able to learn more about the great wines of the Veneto in weekly classes, and there will be tastings at the wine store and Eataly’s La Piazza on Fridays and Saturdays.

"Move the Passion" is an exclusive event promoted by U.Vi.Ve. taking place on December 3, 2013. It is the first wine “marathon” to be held through the streets of Manhattan. From 6 to 10 pm, tastings will be held at seven different locations, which include some of the most popular stores and restaurants in the Big Apple, to taste the fine wines of the seven Italian consortiums. The locations have been chosen for their combination of Made-in-Italy style and exclusivity: from Urbani Truffles to Giovanni Rana’s restaurant, the Arc Linea design showroom to the wine & food temples of Astor Center, Risotteria Melotto, Revel, and Maslow 6. The participants will receive a kit with a wine tasting pouch, a map, a notebook and can explore these seven locations to discover wonderful Veneto wines matched with Italian gastronomic specialties. The official sponsors are: Urbani Tartufi, Sanpellegrino, Pasta De Cecco, Risotteria Melotti, Arc Linea Cucine, Loison Pasticceria, Revel, and Giovanni Rana. Guests can register for the event upon invitation at http://www.movethepassion.com.

An additional trade tasting event, "Secret Somm," will be held at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria in the heart of NoHo the night of December 4th. Fellow sommeliers will mingle and toast the holidays by exchanging their favorite bottle of Veneto wine in a casual, festive setting.

Located in northeast Italy, the Veneto is the largest producer of DOC wines in the "Tre Venezie", a group of three highly prolific Italian wine regions, named after the ancient Venetian Republic. From the foothills of the Alps to the coast of the Adriatic, the Veneto’s diverse terroir is well-suited to both red and white varietals. Home to the world’s largest wine fair every spring, Vinitaly, the Veneto boasts a wide range of popular grapes, both indigenous and native.

3 Things You Need to Know When Buying Olive Oil

Olive Oil

Bellucci Premium, a producer of high quality extra virgin olive oil, comments on an article that shares the expertise of olive oil buyer Tim Bucciarelli.

According to a Men’s Health article published on November 21st titled “Olive Oil: What You Need To Know,” it takes special knowledge to identify the appropriate olive oil to purchase.

The article shares three key tips from olive oil buyer Tim Bucciarelli:

  • Buy it: Unlike wine, olive oil does not become better with age. The fresher the olive oil, the better. Some producers provide a harvest date, which is ideal because you want to choose the oil which has been most recently harvested. Most bottles, however, do not provide a “best by” or harvest date, so tasting is the only method. “Cues like freshness, region, and olive varietal can point to a great bottle,” says the article.
  • Store it: Make sure to store olive oil properly. Near the stove, where most individuals store their olive oil, is a bad place because the heat can make the olive oil go bad. Choose a dark place that has a room temperature, like a pantry.
  • Enjoy it: When cooking with olive oil, try to keep it at a very low temperature so you don’t run the risk of burning it and losing the flavor. When using olive oil on a salad or as a drizzle on a dish, the flavors really make a difference. Since drizzled olive oil has never been exposed to heat, it still maintains its entire original flavor.

Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for Tuscan olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, believes that knowing how to purchase and cook with olive oil can mean all the difference. “Each variety of olive oil has its own unique taste, so it is important to know what you are buying. The region and the harvest date are two very important factors in purchasing olive oil. You should research the types of olive oil that come from particular regions. For example, olive oils from Umbria tend to be sweeter. Also, never purchase oil if you are unsure when it was harvested; it could already be rancid.”

Bellucci offers three different types of oil, including an organic option, with a mild peppery flavor and fruity undertones that will satisfy any palate. Bellucci Premium Toscano extra virgin olive oil uses olives that are grown on the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany, and maintained by 3rd and 4th generation farmers. The third type of oil Bellucci produces is the finest 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil, grown in many different regions of Italy.

Wine Drawers Among Hottest Kitchen Appliance Trends

Fancy Kitchen

Where do gardens grow? Next to the sink, of course. What about coffee? How about built into the cabinets, above the cutlery? Vernon appliance store Genier’s Appliances' top five kitchen appliance trends show homeowners can have it all—warm, nutritious meals made easy in stylish surroundings.

1. The Urban Cultivator, A Garden in Your Kitchen:
Many people love the crisp, nutritious, pesticide-free veggies they buy at the Kelowna Farmers’ Market in the summer. Now they can enjoy them year-round by growing their own greens and herbs in the Urban Cultivator, one of the most popular new kitchen appliances. It looks like a refrigerator but it feeds families.

“People are looking for ways to buy fresh, buy local, buy organic,” says Kirkham. “The Urban Cultivator is the easiest way to guarantee people’s produce is all of those things.”

2. Steam Ovens
Now that cooks have all those fresh vegetables, they can infuse them with flavour and retain all those vitamins by cooking them gently in a steam oven. Vernon and Kelowna homeowners love steam ovens, which cook food at all angles with hot steam, because they’re healthy and easy. Steam ovens can poach fish or eggs, ready rice and cook vegetables.

“For me, my favourite thing about steam ovens is reheating foods in a snap. You can’t even tell they’re leftovers,” says Kirkham. “Unlike boiling or using a microwave, you can enhance the taste and nutrition of your food. It’s so much healthier.”

3. Speed Ovens
With many families juggling such busy schedules, one of the most convenient new appliances Okanagan homeowners are after right now is the speed oven, a hybrid between a convection oven and a microwave to help families cook everything from popcorn to turkeys. Speed ovens can cook anyone’s favourite meal in a fraction of the time so families can still enjoy healthy home-cooked meals at the end of a long day. Choose either the convection or microwave cooking method or combine them for fast and thorough results.

“You can roast, bake, defrost or reheat all in one appliance. We’re actually hearing pretty good reviews about speed ovens,” says Kirkham. “They’re really a beneficial appliance to consider for your kitchen.”

3. Panel-Ready Appliances
One of the buzz words on kitchen renovation shows is ‘panel-ready,’ also known as ‘built-in.’ That means appliances arrive at the door ready for a cabinetmaker to cover a homeowner’s dishwasher or fridge, for example, with the same beautiful cabinetry that faces all of their cupboards.

“Panel-ready appliances really give your kitchen a seamless, custom look,” says Kirkham.

4. Appliance Drawers
Why get down on hands and knees to dig for forks or condiments? More and more Vernon, Kelowna, and Kamloops homeowners are installing appliance drawers because they’re stylish and easy to use. Dish drawers allow people to run half loads, fridge drawers below the cutting board give cooks easy access to vegetables, warming drawers keep food hot while dad puts on the finishing touches, and wine drawers keep bottles at the perfect temperature.

“People want to live out of drawers now,” says Kirkham. “The designs for refrigerator drawers and microwave drawers, for example, are very contemporary, and it means everything inside the drawer is looking right at you, so drawers are much easier to use.”

5. Built-in Coffee Makers
Say goodbye to a clunky coffee maker taking up counter space and have it built seamlessly into kitchen cabinets instead. Genier’s Vernon appliance store is selling more and more built-in coffee makers that brew everything from espressos and lattes to ordinary cups of hot joe. Just drop in fresh beans and make a cafe-style selection! Each individual cup gets fresh grinds at the touch of a button, and the coffee is second to none with the oils of the bean or “crema” sitting on top of every cup.

“If you love coffee, this is a great way to start your day. Built-in coffee makers are the height of convenience, and they look stunning,” says Kirkham.

With new innovative designs and technology combined with the ever-increasing interest on healthy eating, these kitchen appliances make cooking fun, easy, and most of all, nutritious.

Benchmark Wine Group Secures Blue Chip Wines from Texas Collector

6-pack of Château Petrus stored in the original wooden case

Benchmark Wine Group has purchased a collection of highly sought-after fine and rare wines from an established Texas surgeon. The wine lot is its first cellar released featuring only the top producers in the world. The leading wine ecommerce website will sell the blue chip wines ranging in price from $250 for a bottle of Carruades de Lafite to $12k for a 6-pack of Château Petrus stored in the original wooden case.

“We’re honored the collector chose Benchmark Wine Group to sell these remarkable wines,” says David Parker, CEO of Benchmark Wine Group. “He has impeccable taste and wanted the wines to be savored by wine enthusiasts, not sit in a cellar adorning the walls.”

With the addition of the 800-bottle collection, the Napa-based company will tout rare verticals of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, First Growth Bordeaux, Château Petrus and Château Le Pin in its 25,000-bottle cellar. From the highly-rated Château Margaux 2003 to La Tâche DRC, there are several collector wines in this cellar.

For example, Château Mouton-Rothschild has been commissioning the world’s greatest artists since 1946 to design its wine labels. The only exception is the unusual gold-enamel bottle for 2000, purchased in this collection. Twice in the history of the artist labels, there have been two used for the same year. The 1993, also featured in this cellar, is one of those years. The United States rejected the original label of a nude nymphet designed by French painter Balthus, so Château Mouton-Rothschild created a blank space where the image should have been.

All wines have been inspected by the Benchmark Wine Group acquisitions team and are provenance guaranteed, as its standard business practice outlines. The bottles can be traced back to the original purchase source and many are in original wooden cases. Most wine bottles or wine cases were purchased upon release directly from the winery or from well-respected auction houses. Since purchase, the wines have been stored in an above-ground wine cellar with temperature and humidity control.

It’s not every day that such fine and rare wines become available. So go big, or go home and browse the collection today!

About Benchmark Wine Group:

Established in 2002, Benchmark Wine Group acquires and sells fine and rare wine to and from retailers, restaurants and collectors. The premier online source for the world's top wines at market leading prices – Lafite, Petrus, Leroy, Krug, Sine Qua Non and Opus One – just to name a few! The Napa-based company draws on decades of collective wine industry experience to obtain the most sought-after wines in the world from private individuals and professional contacts. Benchmarkwine.com offers 24-hour access to the 25,000-bottle wine cellar, displaying inventory in real-time.

Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak Elevating the Taste of Wine

Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak

The Pine Mountain - Cloverdale Peak (PM-CP) Appellation Winegrowers Association recently hosted its first official tasting event at AQ Restaurant in San Francisco. The happy attendees included members of the wine industry, media and marketing people from around the bay area and wine educators from San Francisco Wine School and elsewhere.

The program began with a welcome from Barry Hoffner, president of the PM-CP winegrowers organization sponsoring the event. He expressed the sentiment of the appellation growers that PM-CP grows very special grapes under the most arduous of growing conditions, in terms of terroir, temperatures, elevation and isolation.

Mr. Hoffner was followed by Joe Benziger (Imagery Estate Winery) and Mark Burningham (Vice President, Winegrowing for Benziger Family) who talked about their 15 years of making wine from Pine Mountain grapes with a particular focus on Bordeaux Reds. They explained that this Bordeaux focus is the best use of the soft tannins, dark colors and distinct flavors resulting from the long hang-time possible on Pine Mountain. They also talked about the beautiful nature that exists in this fairly isolated and relatively undisturbed mountain.

The wines available for tasting, all made from Pine Mountain grapes, included several Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings from Coppola, Ampère, Treasure Island Wines, Bergeron Monks, Respite Wines, Miro Cellars, Captûre Wines and Arbios Cellars. Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc from Imagery Estates as well as a Chardonnay from Captûre were also offered.

The growers on the mountain include Oak Ridge Ranch and Vineyards, Pine Mountain Vineyards, Reichel Vineyards, Silverwood Ranch, Sky Pine Vineyards and Tin Cross Vineyards. All are very serious growers focused on ultra-premium grapes. About half of those produce their own wines including Sky Pine Vineyards (Bob Dog Wines), Reichel Vineyards (Respite Wines), Tin Cross Vineyards (Captûre Wines) and Pine Mountain Vineyard (Ampère). Many employ renowned winemakers to exploit the exceptional fruit produced on Pine Mountain. Winemakers May-Britt Malbec, Denis Malbec and Thomas Rivers Brown, among others, are producing amazing Cabernet Sauvignon. (The only winery actually on the mountain is Bob Dog Wines which is owned by Kandy Ward the proprietor of Sky Pines Vineyards.)

Matt Semmelhack, co-proprietor of AQ Restaurant, (1085 Mission Street, San Francisco) described the food preparations that were being offered at the event. All the vegetables, game and olive oil were obtained from or produced with Pine Mountain farm/ranch-to-table items. The Smoked Wild Boar Sausage and the Wild Boar Rillettes (with Crostini and Raisins) used wild boar from Split Rock Springs Ranch on Pine Mountain. The vegetables came from Hoffner's Silverwood Ranch while olive oil from Split Rock Springs Ranch and Silverwood Ranch was served for tasting and used in the preparations. Other menu items included: Autumn Vegetable & Goat Cheese Frittata, Wild Boar Sliders with Tomato Jam and Aged Cheddar, Local Farmstead Cheeses and Chilled Heirloom Tomato Soup.

The common theme from the feedback received at the event was how consistently good the wines poured and paired at the event were. Other comments identified the intense concentration, velvety tannins, consistency in structure and fruit profile among the reds and black fruit combined.

Perhaps most astute were the comments about the "feel" of the appellation, the community, and the similarities in terroir among the wines offered. That feeling is likely created by the community of Pine Mountain residents, ranchers, farmers and winegrape growers.

In addition to the focus on growing premium high-elevation winegrapes, Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak members are passionate about preserving the abundant and special natural environment and history that has long been known as Pine Mountain near the town of Cloverdale. The Winegrowers associations prides itself on having a number of members who are not winegrape growers like Matt Semmelhack (Longview Ranch). Jamie White and Joakim Silvanderson, the owners of Solliden on Pine Mountain (soon to be an ecological retreat with Scandinavian sensibilities) are also members. They are bringing their artistic skills and PM-CP supporter-friends into the fold to help with the marketing of the new AVA and in the process, creating a strong community of sustainable ranchers/farmers.

"The sky is the limit for this area and it is where one of our signature vineyards is located," says Joe Benziger.

Pine Mountain - Cloverdale Peak AVA was approved by the Federal Tobacco, Tax & Trade Bureau for AVA designation in December 2011 and is highlighted by a small number of growers using sustainable vineyard practices on their high elevation vineyards.

5 Amazing Benefits from Drinking Wine

Young Woman Drinking a Deep Red Wine

1. A Longer Life

Those who drink wine have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers, according to a Finnish study of 2,468 men over a 29-year period, published in the Journals of Gerontology.

2. Reduces Risk of Heart Disease

Red-wine tannins contain procyanidins, which protect against heart disease. Wines from Sardinia and southwest France have more procyanidins than other wines revealed a study at Queen Mary University in London.

3. Lowers Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

It has been found that moderate drinkers have 30 percent less risk than nondrinkers of developing type 2 diabetes. These were the findings from Amsterdam's VU University Medical Center based on 369,862 individuals studied over an average of 12 years each.

4. Can Lower the Risk of Stroke

For those who consume moderate amounts of alcohol, the possibility of suffering a blood clot–related stroke drops by about 50 percent. This encouraging fact was uncovered by a Columbia University study of 3,176 individuals over an eight-year period.

5. Slows Decline of Brain Function

Maybe the most impressive stat of all, brain function declines at a markedly faster rate in nondrinkers than in moderate drinkers according to a Columbia University study of 1,416 people.
