Shane Carruth Nominated as Best Director for Upstream Color by Film Independent Spirit Awards

Shane Carruth

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Film Independent at LACMA Film Series, announced nominations for the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards this morning. Film Independent President Josh Welsh presided over the press conference held at the W Hollywood, with actresses Octavia Spencer and Paula Patton presenting the nominations. Nominees for Best Feature included 12 Years a Slave, All Is Lost, Frances Ha, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska.

Among the nominees for Best Director is Shane Carruth for his masterpiece Upstream Color, which is also nominated for Best Editing.

Mud was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film's director, casting director and ensemble cast.

In its commitment to recognizing the importance of below the line contributions to the art of filmmaking, Film Independent has now introduced, for the first year, the Best Editing category in the Spirit Awards.

"The nominations this year are from such an amazing pool of talented film artists," said Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent. "Their work demonstrates the deep originality and uniqueness of vision that are at the heart of independent film. At Film Independent, we work all year round to promote that spirit, and the nominees celebrated here today are tremendous ambassadors for their crafts, both in front of and behind the camera."

Winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The awards ceremony will be held as a daytime luncheon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, with the premiere broadcast airing later that evening at 10:00 pm ET/PT exclusively on IFC.

Winners of the Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grants will be highlighted during the awards ceremony and announced at the Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominee Brunch on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood.

The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from 325 submissions this year and applied the following guidelines in determining the nominations: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost & individual compensation) and percentage of financing from independent sources. The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees are comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, critics, casting directors, festival programmers and other working film professionals.

Indie Filmmaker Creating New Film Noir Superhero Movie Using LightWave 3D

Dr. Obsidian Airship

Superheroes are conceived for the realm of myth and might. This is especially true for the masked character Dr. Obsidian, a comic-book hero created by Mark Kochinski in hopes of captivating movie audiences in the forthcoming movie "Lost Hero: The Search for Dr. Obsidian." Shot in a variety of styles—from film noir to psychedelic sixties to high-def—Dr. Obsidian includes numerous CG shots created with LightWave 3D software.

The plot to "Dr. Obsidian," which Kochinski is creating, directing, producing, and writing, is that the Dr. Obsidian character got his start in the business during the late 1930s. Production for a sequel began overseas, but a ship carrying the film seemingly was lost at sea as war broke out. Afterward, financial issues prevented Brazen Pictures from re-establishing the character. With the introduction of television, Brazen planned to resurrect the property some years later, only to have the plans thwarted by scandal involving one of the actresses. A campy, psychedelic version almost made it to television during the 1960s. Then, during the comic-book craze in the 1990s, the property was optioned and now appears ready for a near-future return to the silver screen, this time under the direction of a big-name VFX master and a team of CGI Jedis.

With LightWave 3D software, Kochinski is making his Dr. Obsidian dream come true. “We had to crank out the effects at a high rate of speed and at minimum expense, and LightWave enabled us to do that,” he says. So when it came time to create Dr. Obsidian’s backstory – and the premise of the film – there was no question that LightWave would play a major role in the production.”

A Matter of Style

According to the filmmaker, it was crucial to treat the film to reflect the period it is supposed to have been shot in. Because a large part of Dr. Obsidian uses the 1930s black-and-white style, the film has to be aged and broken down. This includes many green screen sequences in which the actors had to be inserted into CG sets built in LightWave or, occasionally, into photographs of old sets and locations.

A large portion of the action was filmed against green screen, so virtual sets were important, many of which were created within LightWave. One of the first and the biggest CG backdrops is the interior of a zeppelin, which serves as the villain’s command center. In all, approximately 30 to 40 percent of the imagery is, or will be, computer graphics (CG).

For constructing the buildings, sets, and “futuristic” weapons and aircraft in Dr. Obsidian, Kochinski relied on the LightWave Modeler. “Modeling in LightWave has always been superb,” he says. “I have been building spaceships for Star Trek to Babylon 5, and now for Dr. Obsidian, in LightWave. The rendering out of the box is excellent, especially if you know how to use it properly. It is a very powerful tool.”

Kochinski likes LightWave’s intuitive interface and the fact that everything is logical and where it should be. “It’s a hard thing to explain when you have worked with the software for as long as I have, but it is organized in a way that makes sense. The fact that the buttons have what they do written on them, as opposed to a funky little picture that you have to take time to figure out what it means, saves a lot of time,” he explains.

The filmmaker also likes that Modeling and Layout are separate sections, especially because it coincides with his workflow. When starting a project, Kochinski skips the sketch-design process and dives straight into modeling in LightWave. “The pipeline supports this. I design in 3D to see what works and what doesn’t, so I design and build simultaneously,” he adds.

One of Kochinski’s favorite features within LightWave is the Edge Bevel. “Adding beveling properly adds a lot of realism to what you are doing,” he says, noting that the Cloning tool also works well for the art-deco look of the sequences in Dr. Obsidian. “I am doing a lot of beveling and cloning, and repeating of geometric shapes, adding hierarchies to get the effects I need.”

Most of the digitally enhanced sequences are from the 1930s scenes, so Kochinski used bump maps for the textures. “They are almost all procedural textures at this point,” he says. “We are talking about flat, painted surfaces that are shades of gray. So when we do photorealistic renders [inside LightWave], they tend to look pretty good.”

Even though LightWave offers a virtual camera, Kochinski is incorporating subtle camera moves into the production, mimicking those used in the 1930s. He is also mimicking the period’s classical stage lighting within LightWave by using three-point lighting, backfill, and key lighting. He uses the Radiosity tool quite a bit, at times using an HDR image map to start out. For more of a studio look, he will use a few dome lights and Monte Carlo radiosity to get bouncy shadows and lights, which “usually generates a nice three-dimensional-looking render.” For interiors, dome lights are preferred; for exterior shots, aerial lights.

“The renderer is fantastic,” says Kochinski of the feature in LightWave. “When set up properly, you get really wonderful, photorealistic effects.” LightWave’s unique Viewport Preview Renderer (VPR) interactive renderer enables him to experiment with lighting, textures, volumetrics, and shading right in the LightWave viewport and get immediate feedback, thus saving valuable time. “There isn’t anything quite like it, and I use it a lot with the work I am doing,” he says.

Past, Present, and Future

Kochinski is currently working in LightWave 11 on a dual-boot Power Mac and plans to migrate to LightWave 11.6 to take advantage of new features like support for 3D printing, the ability to create or use existing CgFX shaders, Spline Control, a surface-baker camera, stereoscopic review capabilities, Raycasting technology to make an object aware of its surroundings in an animation, and more.

Kochinski has spent more than six years working on Dr. Obsidian in his spare time with approximately 15 volunteers. Now, he is pulling together enough footage to raise $50,000 on Kickstarter, the amount needed to complete the project. Follow the movie’s progress at DoctorObsidian.com.

A Journey Through the Veneto Coming to New York City

Women Tasting Wine

During the month of December, New York City will be home to various wine and culinary events dedicated to celebrating the great wines of the Veneto just in time for the holidays. The month-long schedule of festivities is brought to the city by U.Vi.Ve., the ‘Union Consortia of Veneto Wines’, and will kick off on December 2nd with a press event at Eataly's La Scuola Grande, epicenter of the promotion and flagship store in the US for all things Italian.

As part of the month-long celebration, all of Eataly’s restaurants will pour signature wines from participating consortia including Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, Lugana DOC, Lessini Durello DOC, Montello e Colli Asolani DOC Prosecco DOC, Soave DOC and Valpolicella DOC. Consumers will also be able to learn more about the great wines of the Veneto in weekly classes, and there will be tastings at the wine store and Eataly’s La Piazza on Fridays and Saturdays.

"Move the Passion" is an exclusive event promoted by U.Vi.Ve. taking place on December 3, 2013. It is the first wine “marathon” to be held through the streets of Manhattan. From 6 to 10 pm, tastings will be held at seven different locations, which include some of the most popular stores and restaurants in the Big Apple, to taste the fine wines of the seven Italian consortiums. The locations have been chosen for their combination of Made-in-Italy style and exclusivity: from Urbani Truffles to Giovanni Rana’s restaurant, the Arc Linea design showroom to the wine & food temples of Astor Center, Risotteria Melotto, Revel, and Maslow 6. The participants will receive a kit with a wine tasting pouch, a map, a notebook and can explore these seven locations to discover wonderful Veneto wines matched with Italian gastronomic specialties. The official sponsors are: Urbani Tartufi, Sanpellegrino, Pasta De Cecco, Risotteria Melotti, Arc Linea Cucine, Loison Pasticceria, Revel, and Giovanni Rana. Guests can register for the event upon invitation at http://www.movethepassion.com.

An additional trade tasting event, "Secret Somm," will be held at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria in the heart of NoHo the night of December 4th. Fellow sommeliers will mingle and toast the holidays by exchanging their favorite bottle of Veneto wine in a casual, festive setting.

Located in northeast Italy, the Veneto is the largest producer of DOC wines in the "Tre Venezie", a group of three highly prolific Italian wine regions, named after the ancient Venetian Republic. From the foothills of the Alps to the coast of the Adriatic, the Veneto’s diverse terroir is well-suited to both red and white varietals. Home to the world’s largest wine fair every spring, Vinitaly, the Veneto boasts a wide range of popular grapes, both indigenous and native.

Participating producers are: Astoria, Bellenda, Bosco Malera, Bottega, Ca' Lojera, Canella, Cantina del Castello, Cantina di Soave, Cantina Riondo, Cantina di Monteforte, Cesari, Corte Moschina, Dal Cero (Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe) , Gerardo Cesari, La Tordera, Le Colture, Marcato, Mionetto, Monte del Fra', Montelvini, Otella, Santa Sofia, Tenuta degli Ultimi, Tinazzi, Toffoli, Valdellovo, Valdo, Vicentini, Villa Sandi, Zardetto, Zenato, Zonin. 3 Things You Need to Know When Buying Olive Oil

Olive Oil

Bellucci Premium, a producer of high quality extra virgin olive oil, comments on an article that shares the expertise of olive oil buyer Tim Bucciarelli.

According to a Men’s Health article published on November 21st titled “Olive Oil: What You Need To Know,” it takes special knowledge to identify the appropriate olive oil to purchase.

The article shares three key tips from olive oil buyer Tim Bucciarelli:

  • Buy it: Unlike wine, olive oil does not become better with age. The fresher the olive oil, the better. Some producers provide a harvest date, which is ideal because you want to choose the oil which has been most recently harvested. Most bottles, however, do not provide a “best by” or harvest date, so tasting is the only method. “Cues like freshness, region, and olive varietal can point to a great bottle,” says the article.
  • Store it: Make sure to store olive oil properly. Near the stove, where most individuals store their olive oil, is a bad place because the heat can make the olive oil go bad. Choose a dark place that has a room temperature, like a pantry.
  • Enjoy it: When cooking with olive oil, try to keep it at a very low temperature so you don’t run the risk of burning it and losing the flavor. When using olive oil on a salad or as a drizzle on a dish, the flavors really make a difference. Since drizzled olive oil has never been exposed to heat, it still maintains its entire original flavor.

Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for Tuscan olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, believes that knowing how to purchase and cook with olive oil can mean all the difference. “Each variety of olive oil has its own unique taste, so it is important to know what you are buying. The region and the harvest date are two very important factors in purchasing olive oil. You should research the types of olive oil that come from particular regions. For example, olive oils from Umbria tend to be sweeter. Also, never purchase oil if you are unsure when it was harvested; it could already be rancid.”

Bellucci offers three different types of oil, including an organic option, with a mild peppery flavor and fruity undertones that will satisfy any palate. Bellucci Premium Toscano extra virgin olive oil uses olives that are grown on the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany, and maintained by 3rd and 4th generation farmers. The third type of oil Bellucci produces is the finest 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil, grown in many different regions of Italy.

Wine Drawers Among Hottest Kitchen Appliance Trends

Fancy Kitchen

Where do gardens grow? Next to the sink, of course. What about coffee? How about built into the cabinets, above the cutlery? Vernon appliance store Genier’s Appliances' top five kitchen appliance trends show homeowners can have it all—warm, nutritious meals made easy in stylish surroundings.

1. The Urban Cultivator, A Garden in Your Kitchen:
Many people love the crisp, nutritious, pesticide-free veggies they buy at the Kelowna Farmers’ Market in the summer. Now they can enjoy them year-round by growing their own greens and herbs in the Urban Cultivator, one of the most popular new kitchen appliances. It looks like a refrigerator but it feeds families.

“People are looking for ways to buy fresh, buy local, buy organic,” says Kirkham. “The Urban Cultivator is the easiest way to guarantee people’s produce is all of those things.”

2. Steam Ovens
Now that cooks have all those fresh vegetables, they can infuse them with flavour and retain all those vitamins by cooking them gently in a steam oven. Vernon and Kelowna homeowners love steam ovens, which cook food at all angles with hot steam, because they’re healthy and easy. Steam ovens can poach fish or eggs, ready rice and cook vegetables.

“For me, my favourite thing about steam ovens is reheating foods in a snap. You can’t even tell they’re leftovers,” says Kirkham. “Unlike boiling or using a microwave, you can enhance the taste and nutrition of your food. It’s so much healthier.”

3. Speed Ovens
With many families juggling such busy schedules, one of the most convenient new appliances Okanagan homeowners are after right now is the speed oven, a hybrid between a convection oven and a microwave to help families cook everything from popcorn to turkeys. Speed ovens can cook anyone’s favourite meal in a fraction of the time so families can still enjoy healthy home-cooked meals at the end of a long day. Choose either the convection or microwave cooking method or combine them for fast and thorough results.

“You can roast, bake, defrost or reheat all in one appliance. We’re actually hearing pretty good reviews about speed ovens,” says Kirkham. “They’re really a beneficial appliance to consider for your kitchen.”

3. Panel-Ready Appliances
One of the buzz words on kitchen renovation shows is ‘panel-ready,’ also known as ‘built-in.’ That means appliances arrive at the door ready for a cabinetmaker to cover a homeowner’s dishwasher or fridge, for example, with the same beautiful cabinetry that faces all of their cupboards.

“Panel-ready appliances really give your kitchen a seamless, custom look,” says Kirkham.

4. Appliance Drawers
Why get down on hands and knees to dig for forks or condiments? More and more Vernon, Kelowna, and Kamloops homeowners are installing appliance drawers because they’re stylish and easy to use. Dish drawers allow people to run half loads, fridge drawers below the cutting board give cooks easy access to vegetables, warming drawers keep food hot while dad puts on the finishing touches, and wine drawers keep bottles at the perfect temperature.

“People want to live out of drawers now,” says Kirkham. “The designs for refrigerator drawers and microwave drawers, for example, are very contemporary, and it means everything inside the drawer is looking right at you, so drawers are much easier to use.”

5. Built-in Coffee Makers
Say goodbye to a clunky coffee maker taking up counter space and have it built seamlessly into kitchen cabinets instead. Genier’s Vernon appliance store is selling more and more built-in coffee makers that brew everything from espressos and lattes to ordinary cups of hot joe. Just drop in fresh beans and make a cafe-style selection! Each individual cup gets fresh grinds at the touch of a button, and the coffee is second to none with the oils of the bean or “crema” sitting on top of every cup.

“If you love coffee, this is a great way to start your day. Built-in coffee makers are the height of convenience, and they look stunning,” says Kirkham.

With new innovative designs and technology combined with the ever-increasing interest on healthy eating, these kitchen appliances make cooking fun, easy, and most of all, nutritious.

Benchmark Wine Group Secures Blue Chip Wines from Texas Collector

6-pack of Château Petrus stored in the original wooden case

Benchmark Wine Group has purchased a collection of highly sought-after fine and rare wines from an established Texas surgeon. The wine lot is its first cellar released featuring only the top producers in the world. The leading wine ecommerce website will sell the blue chip wines ranging in price from $250 for a bottle of Carruades de Lafite to $12k for a 6-pack of Château Petrus stored in the original wooden case.

“We’re honored the collector chose Benchmark Wine Group to sell these remarkable wines,” says David Parker, CEO of Benchmark Wine Group. “He has impeccable taste and wanted the wines to be savored by wine enthusiasts, not sit in a cellar adorning the walls.”

With the addition of the 800-bottle collection, the Napa-based company will tout rare verticals of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, First Growth Bordeaux, Château Petrus and Château Le Pin in its 25,000-bottle cellar. From the highly-rated Château Margaux 2003 to La Tâche DRC, there are several collector wines in this cellar.

For example, Château Mouton-Rothschild has been commissioning the world’s greatest artists since 1946 to design its wine labels. The only exception is the unusual gold-enamel bottle for 2000, purchased in this collection. Twice in the history of the artist labels, there have been two used for the same year. The 1993, also featured in this cellar, is one of those years. The United States rejected the original label of a nude nymphet designed by French painter Balthus, so Château Mouton-Rothschild created a blank space where the image should have been.

All wines have been inspected by the Benchmark Wine Group acquisitions team and are provenance guaranteed, as its standard business practice outlines. The bottles can be traced back to the original purchase source and many are in original wooden cases. Most wine bottles or wine cases were purchased upon release directly from the winery or from well-respected auction houses. Since purchase, the wines have been stored in an above-ground wine cellar with temperature and humidity control.

It’s not every day that such fine and rare wines become available. So go big, or go home and browse the collection today!

About Benchmark Wine Group:

Established in 2002, Benchmark Wine Group acquires and sells fine and rare wine to and from retailers, restaurants and collectors. The premier online source for the world's top wines at market leading prices – Lafite, Petrus, Leroy, Krug, Sine Qua Non and Opus One – just to name a few! The Napa-based company draws on decades of collective wine industry experience to obtain the most sought-after wines in the world from private individuals and professional contacts. Benchmarkwine.com offers 24-hour access to the 25,000-bottle wine cellar, displaying inventory in real-time.

Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak Elevating the Taste of Wine

Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak

The Pine Mountain - Cloverdale Peak (PM-CP) Appellation Winegrowers Association recently hosted its first official tasting event at AQ Restaurant in San Francisco. The happy attendees included members of the wine industry, media and marketing people from around the bay area and wine educators from San Francisco Wine School and elsewhere.

The program began with a welcome from Barry Hoffner, president of the PM-CP winegrowers organization sponsoring the event. He expressed the sentiment of the appellation growers that PM-CP grows very special grapes under the most arduous of growing conditions, in terms of terroir, temperatures, elevation and isolation.

Mr. Hoffner was followed by Joe Benziger (Imagery Estate Winery) and Mark Burningham (Vice President, Winegrowing for Benziger Family) who talked about their 15 years of making wine from Pine Mountain grapes with a particular focus on Bordeaux Reds. They explained that this Bordeaux focus is the best use of the soft tannins, dark colors and distinct flavors resulting from the long hang-time possible on Pine Mountain. They also talked about the beautiful nature that exists in this fairly isolated and relatively undisturbed mountain.

The wines available for tasting, all made from Pine Mountain grapes, included several Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings from Coppola, Ampère, Treasure Island Wines, Bergeron Monks, Respite Wines, Miro Cellars, Captûre Wines and Arbios Cellars. Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc from Imagery Estates as well as a Chardonnay from Captûre were also offered.

The growers on the mountain include Oak Ridge Ranch and Vineyards, Pine Mountain Vineyards, Reichel Vineyards, Silverwood Ranch, Sky Pine Vineyards and Tin Cross Vineyards. All are very serious growers focused on ultra-premium grapes. About half of those produce their own wines including Sky Pine Vineyards (Bob Dog Wines), Reichel Vineyards (Respite Wines), Tin Cross Vineyards (Captûre Wines) and Pine Mountain Vineyard (Ampère). Many employ renowned winemakers to exploit the exceptional fruit produced on Pine Mountain. Winemakers May-Britt Malbec, Denis Malbec and Thomas Rivers Brown, among others, are producing amazing Cabernet Sauvignon. (The only winery actually on the mountain is Bob Dog Wines which is owned by Kandy Ward the proprietor of Sky Pines Vineyards.)

Matt Semmelhack, co-proprietor of AQ Restaurant, (1085 Mission Street, San Francisco) described the food preparations that were being offered at the event. All the vegetables, game and olive oil were obtained from or produced with Pine Mountain farm/ranch-to-table items. The Smoked Wild Boar Sausage and the Wild Boar Rillettes (with Crostini and Raisins) used wild boar from Split Rock Springs Ranch on Pine Mountain. The vegetables came from Hoffner's Silverwood Ranch while olive oil from Split Rock Springs Ranch and Silverwood Ranch was served for tasting and used in the preparations. Other menu items included: Autumn Vegetable & Goat Cheese Frittata, Wild Boar Sliders with Tomato Jam and Aged Cheddar, Local Farmstead Cheeses and Chilled Heirloom Tomato Soup.

The common theme from the feedback received at the event was how consistently good the wines poured and paired at the event were. Other comments identified the intense concentration, velvety tannins, consistency in structure and fruit profile among the reds and black fruit combined.

Perhaps most astute were the comments about the "feel" of the appellation, the community, and the similarities in terroir among the wines offered. That feeling is likely created by the community of Pine Mountain residents, ranchers, farmers and winegrape growers.

In addition to the focus on growing premium high-elevation winegrapes, Pine Mountain Cloverdale Peak members are passionate about preserving the abundant and special natural environment and history that has long been known as Pine Mountain near the town of Cloverdale. The Winegrowers associations prides itself on having a number of members who are not winegrape growers like Matt Semmelhack (Longview Ranch). Jamie White and Joakim Silvanderson, the owners of Solliden on Pine Mountain (soon to be an ecological retreat with Scandinavian sensibilities) are also members. They are bringing their artistic skills and PM-CP supporter-friends into the fold to help with the marketing of the new AVA and in the process, creating a strong community of sustainable ranchers/farmers.

"The sky is the limit for this area and it is where one of our signature vineyards is located," says Joe Benziger.

Pine Mountain - Cloverdale Peak AVA was approved by the Federal Tobacco, Tax & Trade Bureau for AVA designation in December 2011 and is highlighted by a small number of growers using sustainable vineyard practices on their high elevation vineyards.

5 Amazing Benefits from Drinking Wine

Young Woman Drinking a Deep Red Wine

1. A Longer Life

Those who drink wine have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers, according to a Finnish study of 2,468 men over a 29-year period, published in the Journals of Gerontology.

2. Reduces Risk of Heart Disease

Red-wine tannins contain procyanidins, which protect against heart disease. Wines from Sardinia and southwest France have more procyanidins than other wines revealed a study at Queen Mary University in London.

3. Lowers Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

It has been found that moderate drinkers have 30 percent less risk than nondrinkers of developing type 2 diabetes. These were the findings from Amsterdam's VU University Medical Center based on 369,862 individuals studied over an average of 12 years each.

4. Can Lower the Risk of Stroke

For those who consume moderate amounts of alcohol, the possibility of suffering a blood clot–related stroke drops by about 50 percent. This encouraging fact was uncovered by a Columbia University study of 3,176 individuals over an eight-year period.

5. Slows Decline of Brain Function

Maybe the most impressive stat of all, brain function declines at a markedly faster rate in nondrinkers than in moderate drinkers according to a Columbia University study of 1,416 people.

Picking the Perfect Business Dinner Wine is Both an Art and a Science

Businessman Drinking Wine

“Wine is bottled poetry,” said Robert Louis Stevenson, author of “Treasure Island.” Colleen Fanning of Grey Market Wine agrees and offers half-a-dozen insights on how to choose the just right wine to help produce an enjoyable business dinner.

“If you're looking to build your own knowledge of wine, explore smaller labels and a variety of grape options, consider attending wine tastings or hosting a wine tasting in your home with multiple clients,” Fanning suggests. “This can be successfully done with simple planning and a straight-forward budget.”

Here are Fanning’s insights on “Picking the Perfect Business Dinner Wine,” followed by her comments on each:

INSIGHT #1: Use the best available resources. “If the restaurant has a sommelier, get them involved right away. If there is no sommelier, a well-informed server can certainly help. Let the wine expert do the work; they will guide you toward the right bottle by considering menu choices, taste and price.”

INSIGHT #2: Find something on the wine list at the right price point and suggest it to your server. “That will discreetly signal your wine budget and help the staffer make appropriate suggestions. Keep in mind you may need multiple bottles. Each bottle pours four to five glasses; plan two glasses per person. Keep in mind there are more wine options than simply red or white and don't be afraid to test out a few new bottles at your dinner. Maybe you'll all find a new winner, and the simple act of trying something new together opens the door for flowing conversations and creating solid memories.”

INSIGHT #3: Take the pressure off yourself. “Seriously! A lot of people who claim to know a lot about wine simply don't. Don't worry about impressing them. Instead, trust your choice of restaurant and their wine selection. I often choose business dinner locations according to the wine list; think of it as an insurance policy. If you're unsure of a restaurant's wine list, you can often find just what you need to know by visiting their website. Some restaurants also offer flights of wines—this is another great way to try new wines in a casual way.”

INSIGHT #4: Consider your goals. “This is a wonderful opportunity to express something about yourself and your company to your guests. Trying to revolutionize your industry? Choose a boutique bottle with a lesser-known grape variety like [Cabernet Franc, Grenache, or Torrontes. Position it as a tasting adventure for the table to experience together. Instilling confidence in the longevity of your brand? No need to reinvent the wheel. Go with a time-honored favorite like a great Napa Valley or Washington Cabernet Sauvignon, an Oregon Pinot."

INSIGHT #5: Pairing food and wine is a great bonus. “Ask your server for help if this is not in your wheelhouse. Servers generally delight in the opportunity and could take your night's dinner to a new level of entertainment. As a fine dining server I jumped at the chance to help guests have the perfectly paired bite. Why? The total is so much greater than the sum of the parts. In other words, even if the bottle you choose isn't a guest's favorite, a spot-on food pairing can make it a show-stopper.”

INSIGHT #6: Remember to trust yourself. “You don't have to be well-informed about wine to choose a great bottle. Use the resources at hand; pay attention to your surroundings. Use your instincts. In other words, use the same skills that helped you get your client in the first place.”

And one more thing to remember: “Life is too short to drink bad wine.”

Central Coast Wine & Food to Host Live Twitter Simultasting with California Winemaker Wes Hagen of Clos Pepe

Central Coast Wine & Food

Central Coast Wine & Food will host wine bloggers and enthusiasts from every corner of the United States on November 13th to a simultaneous tasting of wine from Clos Pepe and a live Twitter Q&A session with Wes Hagen (@WesHagen), renowned vineyard manager and winemaker at Clos Pepe Vineyards. For the tasting, bottles of 2009 Clos Pepe Estate Pinot Noir will be shipped to a short list of participating bloggers from across the country.

“In the vineyard, my job is to get out of the way and let the dirt do the talking,” said Hagen. “Now we get to use technology to enhance the last great analog experience in American culture - sitting around a table sharing food and wine.”

Join in on November 13th at 5:30 PM Pacific/7:30 CST/8:30 EST to ask your questions and learn the finer points of the vine. By using the hashtag #DirtDontLie on Twitter, any messages will automatically become part of the discussion.

Central Coast Wine & Food recently hosted a video simultasting with Morgan Clendenen, “the Queen of Viognier,” at the Texas Wine School in Houston.

“I was surprised, it was my first time doing a video tasting like this, but it really felt like we were in the same room together,” said Clendenen, winemaker at Cold Heaven Cellars. “It was fun and I’d do it again.”

Central Coast Wine & Food, a marketing and new media campaign, connects the up-and-coming agricultural regions between Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz with wine and food enthusiasts through social media and pop-up tasting events.

“Using social media channels like this creates a deep connection with the wine that you can’t get unless you visit the vineyard for a private tour,” said William Fernandez, founder of Central Coast Wine & Food. “Anyone with an internet connection can join and ask a small production winemaker questions while they taste their wine - that kind of access is priceless.”

The country’s best wine bloggers will participate in the simultaste, including:

  • Amy Power and Joe Power - AnotherWineBlog.com
  • Joe Roberts - 1WineDude.com wine reviewer
  • Pamela Heiligenthal - Enobytes.com

Valdellövo's Anno Zero Extra-Dry Prosecco Now Available in New York

 Valdellövo's Anno Zero Extra-Dry Prosecco

Valdellövo winery is located in what the local farmers call the “Valley of the wolf”, in the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene area, in Veneto, Italy and Benedetto Ricci with his wife Clotilde are behind this estate.

Annozero is Valdellövo's signature extra-dry prosecco, which combines the best of Valdellövo grapes with the latest winemaking technology, to obtain a sparkling wine that’s elegant, smooth and fresh with a broad array of aromas that capture the essence of the Conegliano’s lush and sunny hillsides. Anno Zero means “year zero”, when it all began for Valdellövo. “We’re taking care of our vineyards following the uses and tradition of the local farmers” says Clotilde. “There are people harvesting the grapes, not machines”.

"We met Benedetto and Clotilde at the award ceremony of the 2012 New York International Wine Competition," said Gal Keren, co-founder of Santa Armosa, which brings authentic wines and olive oils to the New York and New Jersey states. Santa Armosa was awarded Importer of the year, while Valdellövo also received a medal for Anno Zero. “As for all Santa Armosa’s wines, Valdellövo makes no compromise on quality.”

About Valdellövo

The winery is located in a hilly area between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, and extends for about 10 hectares with production of Prosecco DOCG Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The wines are made only from grapes grown in the Valdellövo vineyards.

About Santa Armosa

Santa Armosa is an importer of wines and olive oils established in 2009. Santa Armosa imports products that are expressions of the terroirs where they come from. This attachment to tradition and roots translates into wines that give a unique drinking experience and olive oils that are fragrant, vibrant and unlike any other you have tasted before. Additionally, Santa Armosa wines and olive oils are environmentally-friendly, as they are produced by very attentive to the nature farmers and winemakers.

Vina von Siebenthal Announces 700th Barrel Arrives at Valparaiso Chile

Vina von Siebenthal

Today, the 700th barrel arrived at Viña Von Siebenthal. It travelled all the way from Bordeaux and arrived by boat to the port of Valparaiso. The last barrel was carefully produced by the French masters at the Tonnellerie Baron, which enjoys a worldwide reputation of being one of the best barrel makers.

The 700 barrels, accumulated over the 15 years since the creation of Viña Von Siebenthal, serve to refine the 220,000 bottles that are produced annually. Indeed, one of the main characteristics of Viña Von Siebenthal is that all the wines are matured in barrel from 12 to 24 months before being bottled.

This process will help increase the aroma and complexity of the wine, providing it with unmatched elegance. Moreover, it is an essential step in the construction of the wine; it fixes tannins and colour as well as enabling it to age harmoniously in the bottles afterwards. The soutirage process is done every four months and involves two employees who work to clean, dry and disinfect the barrels during the procedure.

About Beckman Winery

Founded in 1994 by Tom and Steve Beckmen, Beckmen Vineyards is a family-run, estate winery located in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. Since its founding, Beckmen Vineyards has emerged as one of North America's premier producers of Rhone varietal wines, while also helping to establish Santa Barbara County as one of California's most highly regarded winegrowing regions.

Eager to return to his farming roots, and convinced of the Santa Ynez Valley's vast potential to produce world-class wines, Tom Beckmen began searching for promising vineyard property in the early '90s. He found what he was looking for on a 40-acre parcel of land with an existing small winery. There he established Beckmen Vineyards. Working together, Tom and Steve began revitalizing the site. Convinced that the vineyard had been planted incorrectly, they painstakingly removed the 16 original acres of vines, and replanted the vineyard with carefully selected varietals, clones and rootstocks.

Committed to building a world-class estate-vineyard program, the Beckmens also purchased a spectacular, unplanted 365-acre Santa Ynez Valley ranch in 1996. Naming it Purisima Mountain Vineyard, Tom and Steve began a meticulous planting process designed to maintain the natural diversity of the site. With an ideal climate and rare limestone subsoils similar to those found in Cote Rotie and Chateauneuf du Pape, the vineyard has proven perfect for producing a range of stunning Rhone varietals, especially Syrah and Grenache.

Under the care and guidance of Tom and Steve, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has earned acclaim as one of California's great Rhone-varietal vineyards. Adding to its reputation as one of the most meticulously cultivated winegrowing sites in all of Santa Barbara County, the vineyard has been farmed 100 percent biodynamically since 2006. Reflecting a passion for quality and a belief in the natural character of the land, the adoption of biodynamic farming practices has only reinforced Steve's vineyard-focused style of winemaking. Believing that the wine in the bottle begins in the soil, Steve and the winemaking team craft wines that capture the unique terroir of Purisima Mountain.

Beckmen Vineyards produces a full line of exceptional estate-grown Rhone varietals including Syrah, Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Rose, Marsanne, and the Cuvee Le Bec blend. It also produces small quantities of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Hailed for the excellence of its portfolio, Beckmen Vineyards was named Food & Wine's "Most Promising Winery" in the magazine's 2000 American Wine Awards. Since then, Beckmen Vineyards has lived up to that promise. In 2007, it was selected as one of the "Top 100 Wineries" in the world by Wine & Spirits magazine.

Wine Institute to Feature Sixty California Wineries at First ProWine China Trade Show

Chinese Girls Drinking wine

SAN FRANCISCO — A delegation of sixty California wineries will exhibit in Wine Institute's California Pavilion at the first-ever ProWine China 2013 Trade Fair Nov. 13-15, 2013 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. The wineries will represent 110 brands and 32 American Viticultural Areas, and regional associations representing Napa Valley, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara wine regions will have a presence in Wine Institute's Pavilion at the sold-out trade show. Thousands of wine buyers are expected to attend.

China is the fifth largest market for California wine exports. In 2012, U.S. wine exports, 90% from California, reached $73.6 million to China, up over 18% from the previous year. U.S. wine exports year-to-date for the eight months Jan. - Aug. 2013 were up 4% by value to China compared to the same time period last year.

News reports say the China wine market is slowing because the Chinese central government began a new austerity program in 2012 that limits spending on gift giving and entertainment by government officials. A portion of private companies in China are also said to be adopting reductions in expenditures to fall in line with government policy.

"Despite the austerity measures, China remains one of the world's fastest growing wine markets, and we are continuing to invest in our California wines awareness program and a full slate of category building efforts," said Linsey Gallagher, Wine Institute Vice President of International Marketing. U.S. wine exports to China, 90 percent from California, have grown dramatically by over 2700% in a decade, from $2.6 million in 2003 to $73.6 million in 2012.

Since 2000, Wine Institute has conducted annual trade missions to China and engaged a full-time marketing agency that has been in place in China for three years. The "California Wines Master Class" program launched last spring will be expanded to 25 cities throughout the country for trade and media covering history, climate, regions, varietals and food pairing. Wine Institute also sponsors several annual tours of California wine country for Chinese media and trade. These activities support Wine Institute's California wines awareness-building campaign in China which includes retail and on-premise promotions, consumer events, advertising, point-of-sale and educational materials, a dedicated website www.discovercaliforniawines.com.cn and social media.

In support of its Asia marketing efforts, Wine Institute is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Wine Regulatory Forum's 2013 Technical Workshop in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 4-6, 2013. More than 130 wine regulators and stakeholders from 20 Pacific Rim governments will meet as part of the first year of a new five-year "Good Regulatory Practices Action Plan," sponsored by the U.S. Government, to facilitate the wine trade among the Asia-Pacific countries.

How Silicon Valley is Transforming the Wine Industry

How Silicon Valley is Transforming the Wine Industry

Silicon Valley and the greater San Francisco Bay area have long had a reputation for being both the center of high tech innovation and a hub of viticultural refinement. Now, these two seemingly disparate worlds are beginning to intertwine. The innovative spirit of Silicon Valley is turning its attention on the age-old traditions surrounding wine, creating big changes in the ways wine is made, marketed, and sold.

WINE SERVICE INNOVATION
Wine preservation and sales are undergoing a transformation thanks in part to Napa Technology, a designer and manufacturer of intelligent dispensing systems based in the heart of Silicon Valley. NapaTechology’s WineStation system uses argon gas in a stationary dispensing unit that allows fine wines to be uncorked and preserved for up to 60 days without spoiling, creating an opportunity for restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues to serve more expensive, finer wines by the glass. Wine preservation systems like the WineStation have created a world in which diners no longer have to settle for mediocre house wines by the glass. The WineStation precisely measures how much wine is dispensensed, minimizing loss and maximizing profits for operators. The unit is also showing up in supermarket aisles, giving shoppers a chance to try before they buy and grocers an opportunity to increase sales.

Apple’s iPad is another facet of technological innovation that has begun to creep into the world of wine service. Several top restaurants in the Bay Area, including Barbacco in San Francisco’s Financial District, have begun to list their wines on iPads placed at every table. Using iPads instead of traditional paper wine lists allows restaurants to save time and money on designing and printing new menus. Flemings Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar has also created a wine list using iPad. The interactive nature of the device allows for extensive tasting notes, pairing suggestions and deeper insights about the wine, ultimately creating a richer experience for diners, and a better sales opportunity for the restaurant.

TRANSFORMATIVE WINE GROWING
Tech titan T. J. Rodgers, who made a fortune at Cypress Semiconductor, has set his sights on transforming the time-honored way in which wine is made. His new fermenters automatically regulate temperature and measure sugar content, a process that is traditionally done by hand in a time-consuming process. His highly efficient fermenters, which wirelessly send data to a central computer, are currently being tested at U. C. Davis. Wines made by his new method can already be purchased from his own Silicon Valley winery, aptly named Clos de la Tech.

TECHNOLOGY INFORMS WINE MARKETING
Technology is also influencing the way wine brands are marketed. Former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s new Odette Estate in Napa County used technological advancements to achieve LEED certification for all structures on the property, a distinction that lends cachet to the Odette brand in tech circles. A few years back, Parducci Winery in Mendocino County captured media attention when it started touting the fact that it was the first winery in the country to become completely carbon-neutral by using technological advancements like wind and solar to power its winemaking operations.

Mobile applications like My Favorite Wine and Drync are having an impact on the ways consumers discover and keep track of their favorite wines. Applications that share reviews, create personal wine journals, and keep track of wine cellar inventory are making a big splash in the otherwise analog world of wine.

Napa Technology has also improved the marketing capabilities for restaurants, retailers and hotels by creating a system for tracking inventory and consumption patterns. The WineStation AccuServe Smartcard can track and manage not just wine inventories and total sales, but can also track what individual guests consume so that operators can market to them based on their preferences.

Tradition and innovation are not usually seen as compatible but when it comes to wine and high tech, the formation of a new symbiotic relationship that is well on its way to transforming both the old and the new.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Unveils the Design for its New Visitor Center with Sweeping Views of its Historic Estate Vineyards

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Unveils the Design for its New Visitor Center

Napa, CA – Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wineries, unveiled the design for its state-of-the-art Visitor Center at an official ceremony with winery principals Ted Baseler (President and CEO of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates) and Marchese Piero Antinori (President of Marchesi Antinori of Italy). Earlier this year, the winery broke ground on the new Visitor Center which will overlook its historic estate vineyards – FAY and S.L.V.

At the ceremony, Ted Baseler and Marchese Piero Antinori were joined by Barcelona-based designer Javier Barba and local architect Dan Macdonald to reveal the watercolor rendering of the new Visitor Center by artist Clayton Perry, which they signed at the ceremony to commemorate this major milestone. The signed artwork will be displayed in the current tasting room for visitors to enjoy until the new 6,000 square foot Visitor Center is completed during the 2014 harvest.

“Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is one of the world’s most highly regarded winery estates,” said Ted Baseler, President and CEO of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. “When we purchased the winery in 2007 in partnership with Marchesi Antinori, our focus was on enhancing the quality of the wines and preserving the legacy of this benchmark producer. We have been investing in every aspect of the winery including enhanced temperature control in the cellar and technology like the Mistral berry sorting system, as well as undergoing vineyard replanting – all with the goal of crafting exceptional wines. With these pieces in place, we believe it’s time to continue our investment in the winery and to Napa Valley by giving our customers a tasting experience that matches the world-class wines being produced.”

Marchese Piero Antinori, whose family has been a leader in the wine business for more than 625 years, believes that quality, passion and innovation are all critical elements in a winery’s success. “There’s no question that the significant investments and enhancements we’ve made are being reflected in the current and upcoming releases,” said Marchese Piero Antinori. “We are very proud that visitors to Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars will soon have a visitor center experience worthy of the wines of this historic estate.”

World-renowned Barcelona-based architect Javier Barba, created the design for the new Visitor Center to take advantage of the stunning views of the estate vineyards and the Stags Leap Palisades as the mountain and its legend are central to the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars story. Using plenty of glass in the design for natural light, the space is bright and natural. More importantly, Barba said, it also allows you to witness the changes the seasons and climate have on our vines in a way that has never been seen before.

Barba also designed and oversaw the building of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Arcade, the Great Room and the Round Room in the wine caves (34,000 square foot) – a four-year project that was completed in 2000. The new Visitor Center will have a similar contemporary look and uses materials that blend with the winery setting and elements from the land. Dan Macdonald of Daniel Macdonald AIA Architects, Inc., and Landscape Architect Sandra Reed of ZAC Landscape Architects are bringing Javier Barba’s vision to life.

The design team plans to source all of the stone for this project from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars land so that visitors can appreciate the natural beauty of the earth occurring in the cliffs of the palisades up close. Each of these design elements will ensure the visitor experience is architecturally harmonious and true to the natural surroundings.

The new Visitor Center will cost approximately $7 million to build; a financial commitment shared by the joint venture partnership of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Marchesi Antinori. Together, they purchased Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in August 2007 for $187 million. The sale included the estate’s historic brand, spectacular Napa Valley winery, and its signature Napa Valley estate vineyards, S.L.V. and FAY.

The winery’s story today is one of Renaissance. Since acquiring the winery in the summer of 2007, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Marchesi Antinori have worked tirelessly to enhance the legacy of this iconic Napa Valley winery. The partners have brought tremendous resources together – not just financial, but also technical and historical expertise plus a passion for innovation and making the very best wines possible.

The 2007 vintage represented the first releases made under the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates/Marchesi Antinori partnership. The 2008 vintage marked the first wines crafted from bud break to bottle. The 2009 CASK 23, S.L.V. and FAY show a stylistic enhancement to even more upfront fruit character and sense of place. They have a beautiful purity of fruit while retaining the balance, elegance and restraint that is the winery’s hallmark.

The 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the vineyard’s first commercial crop, stunned the wine world when it bested four top-ranked Bordeaux wines, including two First Growths, in a blind tasting held in Paris. At that time, California wines were considered curiosities, hardly in the same class as the best French wines. This seismic event has been described as “sparking a staggering revolution in vineyard technology,” “a major turning point in consumers’ attitudes,” and “a moment that shook the global wine establishment to its roots.” A 2005 book by George Taber documented the tasting, Judgment of Paris: California vs France and the 1976 Paris Tasting That Revolutionized Wine.
